Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025

I especially wish all bicycle lovers of the history of cycling a relaxing Christmas time and a Happy New Year 2025.

Postcards - CHRISTMAS

Unveiling of the statue of Jan and Josef Kohout

Jan Kohout (1819-1884) was a factory worker from Smíchov near Prague who in the winter of 1879/1880 made high wheels for his sons Josef and František. It was the first act in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy that initiated the development of cycling in Bohemia. Josef Kohout (1863-1946) became the most important rider of that time. He co-founded the Český klub velocipedistů (ČKV 1880). He founded and managed the magazine Velocipedista (1880-1890).

Preparations for the unveiling of the statue

The monument to father and son Kohout was initiated by the Czech Velocipedist Club in 1880, headed by the chairman Dr. Jan Králík, it was financed by Mrs. Vratislava Čiperová from the bequest of her husband, Mr. Ing. Jan Schaffer, it was created by father and son Karel and Petr Holub.

Making a sculpture

The unveiling of the statue took place on November 19, 2024

Cooperation was shown by the owner of the land, Invesco Real Estate. You can find the statue in the park in Smíchov, bounded by the streets Svornosti, Hořejší nábřeží and U železnično mostu. The symbolic place is practically where Kohot's mill machinery factory was located.

Ceremonial unveiling of the statue

On the occasion of the unveiling of the statue, the Invesco Real Estate company prepared a temporary exhibition of the works of the authors of the statue, Karel and Petr Holubový, in the building.

Antik bike Europe Tour 2024

Day 1 - From Prague through Germany to the Austrian Alps

It looks simple. Get in the car and go. Preparation and planning, arranging and organizing private collections, varied museum opening hours kept us busy. Practically a year of work! Finally the plan is done and we can start.

Go on!

STOP 1: Arnschwanger Fahrradmuseum - Germany

The Wirtshöhe Arnschwang is a historic complex from 1845 that has been converted into a bicycle museum by the Arnschwang Bicycle Museum Association. Nes has over 200 historic bicycles, mostly with German history, on three floors.

STOP 2: Ferdinand Porsche Erlebniswelten fahr(T)raum, Mattsee - Austria

353/A - Porsche bicycles

The Porsche company is known above all for top cars. But we cannot overlook her experiments with the bicycle. The founder Ferdinand Porsche is also connected with Czech history, so the newly opened super modern museum is a great achievement of his family, which is behind this project. The answer to why in Mattsee is simple: this is where Mr. Porsche's nephew lives, who takes care of the entire ride.

Celebrating 20 years of the museum, Fahrrad FEST 2024, Germany

The efforts and the good name of the entire family of the owner of the museum, Ivan Sojc, have made the meeting of collectors perhaps the most interesting specialized exchange in Europe within a few years. Today, Fahrrad FEST in Bad Bruckenau, on the premises of a great bicycle museum, is regularly visited by collectors from all over Germany, Austria, Holland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, Switzerland and other countries. Take a close look at some photos from the event and make your own judgment based on the quality of the bikes on offer. The number of visitors cannot be compared with the gigantic vintage events for cars or motorcycles, but there are definitely more real bike collectors and buyers here than anywhere else.
Always the first weekend in July, so mark the date July 1, 2025 in your calendar now so you don't miss your chance to be there next year.
