Czech Velocipedist Club 1880 – field session 2025
The oldest cycling club in Bohemia – the 1880 Czech Velocipedist Club always meets at the beginning of the year for its annual meeting. This time it was combined with a trip to Germany and a few stops, which made the trip an incredible research experience.

Photos here were taken 2025 when we were there.
We arrived at our accommodation in the dark. The border town of Rumburk welcomed us with a flurry of Vietnamese market vendors, a clean hotel and, above all, the very sophisticated KOCOUR brewery. Friendly service, a wide selection and a great atmosphere were the reward for a busy first day.
DAY 2
Stop 4 - Muzeum Achilles, Horní Police – Czech Republic
Operation of a museum with a permanent exhibition of historical bicycles and motorcycles.
Address: 9 května 4, 471 06 Horní Police, Czech republic

Achilles Fahrrad- und Motorfahrzeugfabrik A. Schneider & Co. was a manufacturer of bicycles, motorcycles and cars in Austria-Hungary and later Czechoslovakia. The company was founded in 1894. In the years 1906 - 1912, under the leadership of A. Schneider and W. John, cars with the Achilles brand were produced. After the First World War, Schneider's son-in-law Ernst Weikert took over the management of the company. The factory now produced only bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles. At this time, the company employed 2,400 people. At the beginning of the Second World War, bicycle production was discontinued. In 1946, the factory was expropriated, the owners left for Germany, where they later founded Achilles-Werke West GmbH.
The main building features the Achilles collection of bicycles and accessories, while the second part of the exhibition is a pure mix of old motorcycles, household appliances and general antiques.
A small taste of the gems that they knew how to make in Horní Police.
Stop 5 - German Watch Museum Glashütte, Germany
We crossed the border before noon and stood in the square in Glashütte, which has been closely associated with the introduction and expansion of the watchmaking trade since the 19th century. In 1845, the first watchmaker, Saxon Ferdinand Adolph Lange, settled in the city, following the call of the Saxon government, from which he also received financial support of 7,000 thalers. He then began training the first watchmakers. Despite the initial difficulties, the watchmaking industry contributed significantly to the economic revival of the city after 1875. Between 1878 and 1956, there was even a "German Watchmaking School in Glashütte." In the last days of World War II, Glashütte was bombed by Soviet aircraft, which partially destroyed it. After the war, the local watchmaking companies were expropriated and merged into the state-owned company "VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe" (GUB). Despite this, local watches have retained an excellent reputation for their quality. After 1900, both the original companies were revived and completely new companies were founded.

We couldn't find the watch that "really" interested us the most in the museum. We had to go elsewhere for that.
The transfer to nearby Dresden was quick. We can forget about the dull socialist Dresden. The center was beautiful, tidy and very cultured. Of course, we were heading to the Technical Museum.
Stop 5 - Dresden Transport Museum – Dresden, Germany
Verkers museum Dresden (Transport Museum Dresden) is situated in city center. There is little strange mix all sorts of motorcycles, parts, bicycles and other machines. Of course there are some very interesting examples.
Photos were taken early 2025.

124/C – Dresden Transport Museum

Stop 6 - Finale - Annual meeting of the Club ČKV 1880
Again, the KOCOUR brewery. The King is dead, long live the King. The club's annual meeting and election of the chairman. The current vice-chairman David Ruml was elected to this honorary position. He will be replaced by the outgoing chairman Jan Králík for the new year 2025. A great tandem that leads the club brilliantly. I keep my fingers crossed and wish you success!
