James Carver and his Hollow Spoke High Wheel
Originally a manufacturer of lace making machines from 1815, Carver turned to bycicles in the 1870s. He took out a patent for hollow spokes on 6 July 1877 and continued to manufacture "Carver", "Hollow Spoke", "Nottingham", "Solid Spoke" and " Tourist Hollow Spoke" high-wheelers for another ten years based at Alfred Street Mills, Nottingham, England. We are showing one of machines with hollow spokes here. "Fortunately" one spoke was broken and we are able show that it is really hollow!
An interesting article by H. Hewitt Griffin from 7 July 1880 described Carver´s patent.
A very rare machine - "High Wheel James Carver" from private collection in Germany
